Minimum Wage: Full List Of Agreements Tinubu’s Govt Reached With Labour Leaders
The federal government and labour unions held a crucial meeting on Monday, June 3rd, at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja.
The purpose of the meeting was to address the ongoing strike action concerning the new minimum wage and the hike in electricity tariffs.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed the outcomes via the ministry’s X handle (formerly known as Twitter).
According to the statement, the following agreements were reached:
1. Commitment to Higher Minimum Wage: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to establishing a National Minimum Wage that exceeds N60,000.
2. Daily Meetings of Tripartite Committee: The Tripartite Committee will convene daily for the next week to finalise an agreeable National Minimum Wage.
3. Labour Union Meetings: Organised labour is to convene meetings with their respective organs immediately to consider the government’s commitment.
4. Protection of Workers: No worker will be victimised as a result of participating in the industrial action.
The resolution was signed by Mohammed Idris and Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, on behalf of the federal government.
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), signed on behalf of organised labour.
It is worth noting that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) suspended the indefinite nationwide strike for one week on Tuesday to give room for the Tripartite Committee on the New Minimum Wage to conclude negotiations.
